I know that it seems I am continually asking you to pray some more... but we need it. Adoption is a roller coaster of emotions, joys, problems, confusion, etc. Just when we think we have everything set to go something else seems to come up. Remember two weeks ago, when I told you that it appeared that the issue with getting visas for the children to travel to the US seemed resolved. Well, as of right now, none of the families in Uganda with legal guardianship cases have been granted visas to come home yet. It seems there is still come confusion over all of this. I would try to explain it all to you, but then I would have to understand it all myself. ;) But please pray for these families that are in limbo and have been 3 months... for patience, strength, comfort, finances. Then please pray for the people in charge and for those advocating for all of us. Please pray for my family and the others like us, that are waiting.... and waiting.
Also, it seems the State Department, has changed a few of the rules too, which may change our travel plans. It seems a power-of-attorney will no longer suffice for some of the appointments, so Cody may have to come at the end of my trip instead of the beginning. So, pray for wisdom for us as we try to sort out who will travel and when.

A Heart for Orphans
I got this information today from The ABBA fund's blog. This organization helps adoptive families in so many ways. I really encourage you to visit the blog and check out the last few blog posts. Powerful reminders of the need to adopt, the need to support adoptive families, and a fabulous explanation of the need for internatioal adoption. But for today, I'll just share these stats with you. I find them very interesting because it seems to me I hear more and more people talking about adoption. But from the statistics it seems the numbers are on the decline. The ABBA Fund's writer suggests the decline is in large part because of tighter restrictions and a push by several large and influential organizations that are against foreign adoptions. All I know, is something needs to be done to get homes for these children.

Lord give them hope as they wait, give them perseverance when what they have been called to seems to become a struggle, give them boldness to proclaim the mystery of the Gospel to all those who question the call you have placed on their lives, and give them wisdom when the adversary begins to tempt them to question you!
Lord, today I pray for the extended families of these families, that you would prepare their hearts for new family members who won't look like them, won't sound like them, or who won't come from a similar background. Birthday!
I need to keep this quick because I am short on time, but I wanted to let you know that we found out Mercy's official birthday today... May 22nd! I was so excited and emotional about it. I think it was just the idea that someone cared enough to remember it. So, that means I have one month to make my goal of getting her by her first birthday. Some days it seems like a long shot, but it could happen. So keep praying!
We got our official court documents today from our attorney so that he can submit them for a court date. So we signed and notarized them and took them to FedEx. They are supposed to arrive by Monday.
In other random news... Some dear friends blessed me with some awesome baby clothes. I now have several sizes and some of the cutest little outfits and precious shoes. This is going to be one well-dressed little girl. Thank you friends!

Out of the Mouths of Emma and Avery
There is not really any new news from Uganda. But LifeLine adoption agency posted this update today. It just kind of clarifies what I posted the other day. Hopefully, tomorrow the first visas will be issued to start bringing these kiddos home. In care you are wondering, visa appointments are only handles on Mondays and Wednesdays. Monday was the first day back in the office after a couple of weeks off for the person in charge of these visas, so none were issued in guardianship cases that day.
We still have no idea on a timeline for us. We are waiting to see what kind of backlog there will be in the courts and embassy. We're just trying to be patient... some days we do better than others. Last night at dinner, Cody prayed for our food and also prayed for Mercy. At the end, Avery chimed in and very forcefully added, "God just bring her to us tomorrow!!" I wish!
A couple of other cute moments... Sunday in children's church the kids were asked something that's happened in their lives that is extraordinary. Emma said, "Well my family is adopting a black baby!" The teacher quickly added, "Yes, a baby from Africa." I just laughed. I've tried to teach my girls that there is nothing wrong or strange about the color of our skin. It's just a fact of life. I never want them to say "the black kid" in a whispered tone. I guess though in some situations that comes out sounding a bit funny. =)
Today I picked up some pictures from Walgreens. Believe it or not I actually took the time to print a few pictures. I'm notorious for letting them sit on the computer forever... and don't even ask me about a scrapbook. So, Avery was flipping through them and saw one of Mercy. She immediately kissed it and said, "My Mercy Dercy. I decided that's going to be her nickname." Way before Avery ever existed, Cody and I were discussing baby names and he told me he liked the name "Avery". We then discussed middle names that would go with this name for a boy. In our silliness, we somehow winded up with "Davery" after my dad, David So when our Avery arrived, we jokingly started calling her Avery Davery from time to time. I guess that's how she picked Mercy Dercy. Ok, way more information that you probably wanted. All of that to say, Emma and Avery are also anxiously awaiting the arrival of Mercy.
In other randomness... if any of you have more SkyMiles than you know what to do with, you could share them with us. =) I've been investigating our plane ticket options. It seems our best bet is going to be with Delta/KLM. They offer a small discount and no change fees for adoptions. But they also told me that people could donate SkyMiles to us to pay for at least one of the tickets. So, I'm just throwing it out there. It would take at least 80,000 miles for one ticket. Let me know if you have some to give away... or you could use them to come with us. What fun!

Good News!
Good news! Yesterday the US State Department issued an official notice on legal guardianships in Uganda. They stated that as long as the guardianship ruling states that the child is to be adopted in the US they will issue a visa. This basically means that the issue is resolved and families should be able to get visas soon and come home! This also means that the rest of us can move forward. Hooray! Now we are just waiting to hear from our attorney (very patiently waiting, ha!) to find out if he has all of the paperwork on Mercy's background ready so we can ask for a court date. We are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel!

Mistake
I made a mistake this morning. I was reading an article online about the Russian government temporarily shutting down adoptions to the U.S. My mistake... reading the comments people made about this issue. Oh my!! I am amazed at what some people will write on a public forum. It really was unbelievable and appalling. The sad thing to me was the number of people decrying international adoption all together stating that we need to take care of "our own" and that people just adopt internationally because they can't qualify to adopt domestically. Really?? Is that why I've had home visits, turned over tax returns, gone for medical exams, been fingerprinted multiple times, filled out endless numbers of papers... because it's easy? There are approximately 150,000 children waiting to be adopted in the US. There are more than 100 million orphans in the world. They ALL need to be adopted and given parents to love, nurture and care for them. There are pros and cons to adopting internationally or domestically. They each have their own hoops to jump through and unique challenges. I'm a big fan of both and don't really have a preference. I don't know the whole situation with this woman that shipped her child back to Russia. Obviously things went wrong all the way around and the system failed this child. But let's not let this one case cause us to fear or put off international adoptions all together. There are too many children at stake.

Yesterday's meeting in Washington went well. Hopefully, we will see some action soon that will get visas issued once again for children being adopted. Please continue to pray for this and for the government leaders that are helping to push this forward. I'll update you when I know more.

Prayer Needed
Please pray... tomorrow there is an important meeting in Washington about Uganda Adoptions/Legal Guardianships. The specifics are a bit confusing and muddled, so I'll spare you all of the details, but please pray for this meeting to go well, for important people to be interested in working for the children of Uganda, and for those waiting to bring their children home to get to do so quickly. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Good... I checked the mail this afternoon and I saw a letter from USCIS (immigration). Instantly, all of the other mail got put aside. My mind, which races far too often, started thinking about what I did wrong on the forms. Did I forget to sign something, some mishap with our fingerprints, problem with our homestudy? But no, it was our approval to adopt. Funny thing is that it was the least official looking thing we've received from them. So I read it about three times to make sure I really understood what I was holding in my hands. I am thrilled we got this back so quickly. It's only been 8 days since our fingerprinting. I had a family connection make a phone call for me a couple of weeks ago to try to speed things up for us. I guess it worked! Praise the Lord!
In other good news, I had my Scentsy party tonight. We had a great time and smelled a lot!! I'll officially close the party on Monday, so I won't know how much we earned until then. But thank you to all who have helped to make this fundraiser a success and so much fun! And a huge thank you to Kylie! If you ever need Scentsy stuff please get in touch with her. She's awesome!
Ok, this may sound totally corny, I also just want to let you all know how much I love seeing you wear your Mercy shirts. It thrills my heart to see them at church, at Easter Egg hunts, at school events, and even on Facebook. =) Adoption can be a pretty time-consuming and emotionally-consuming venture. When I see you all wearing our shirts it reminds me that we have all of you cheering us on and praying for us. And I must say I think they look pretty-darn cute too!
The Bad... there is still no real resolution in Uganda in regards to the visa situation. We pretty much are ready to go anytime, but we can't until this is resolved. I do not know all of the ins and outs, but I know people are working very hard to figure this out. Please pray for this happen to quickly, for our sake, but also for the sake of the numerous other families involved.
The Ugly... the past few days I've been hit even more with the reality of the ugly-side of adoption. We have learned a little bit more about Mercy's history and we will learn even more soon. It's just more reminders to me of the sadness from which she comes. I tend to focus more on the excitement of making her part of our family and the joy she will bring to us. But to be an orphan, her life has had to endure tragedy. Death, abandonment, poverty... the list goes on and on. I pray for her now as she deals with all of this on a day-to-day basis. I pray for her near-future as she goes through huge adjustments to life with us. I pray for her distant future when she has questions about her biological family and the many questions of "why". Questions that I will most likely not be able to answer. God give her peace and surround her with your love. Help me show her your grace, love and mercy.

Party Time!

Patience, Patience, Patience
I think I'm hoping that if I type the word "patience" enough maybe I'll get some! I apologize for not updating anything on here this past week. I just kept waiting for some more concrete news to share, but no such luck. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure where things stand right now between the Embassy and the Ugandan courts. I've heard rumors and tidbits here and there, but nothing substantial and no real progress. Please keep praying. Mercy is now 10 months old. We want to bring her home soon.
Tuesday, Cody and I were officially fingerprinted for immigration. Amazingly, we were in and out of there in less than 10 minutes! Immigration sends the information to the FBI to process. We have already received our FBI clearance, so it still baffles me why we they do not just share this information among agencies, but what do I know! So, we have now done everything required of us for this process. Now it is just up to other people and agencies... this is where I have a hard time because there isn't really anything for me to do and anyone who knows me very well knows that I always like to have something to do, to cross of my to-do list.
So I made a new to do list... everything that needs to be done, bought, cleaned, and prepared before we do go to Uganda. =) I bought Mercy her first pair of shoes this week. I could not resist and I got a good deal. I just hope they fit. I think baby shoes are just about the cutest things ever... not that the children ever really keep them on, but they look so cute.
We also received a beautiful gift for Mercy... from someone I've never met. I've mentioned before the ladies from Illinois that have travelled to Uganda with me. A sweet woman from their church heard our story and decided to make Mercy a blanket. I just love the beautiful yellow! I can not wait to some day snuggle up with Mercy in it and tell her about the many people who loved her before they ever met her.
Hopefully next weekend we will start working on moving Emma to her new room and then changing Emma's room to Mercy's room. I'll post pictures when actual progress is being made.
